Massachusetts and Global Leadership
I was honored to be able to take part in several international visits at the State House this summer, including as the host of the June visit of the 8th Secretary General of the United Nations, His Excellency Ban Ki-moon.
The Secretary General addressed both our new Joint Committee on Export Development on several issues impacting our world, including the fate of the Paris Climate Accord, refugee crises in the Middle East and Europe, and the importance of parliamentary democracy. He also spoke to the House of Representatives and met with Speaker Bob DeLeo about his perspective.
As the lead architect of the Paris Climate Accord, Mr. Ban was sad to see the United States decide to pull back from it, but hopeful that our country will return to the agreement because, in his words, “we have to think about how we can make sure that our succeeding generations can live harmonious with our nature.”
His visit provided an opportunity for the Joint Committee on Export Development to hear from one of the world’s great leaders as we begin our own journey developing Massachusetts’ trade ties with our partner nations.
